In a heartwarming event that unfolded on Tuesday, 17th October 2023, Hon. Francis Mwania Mulwa, the esteemed MCA of Mtito-Andei ward, spearheaded the grand inauguration of the long-awaited Kilumilo water project. This initiative, which had been in the works for over five years, finally came to fruition, bringing immeasurable joy to the residents of Kilumilo and its neighboring villages, including Kavungwa and Yikisaya.
The project, a testament to resilience in the face of challenges, had encountered setbacks such as the unfortunate burning down of the essential water pumping machinery and limited funds. However, the unwavering determination of the community, coupled with the collaborative efforts of Welthungerhilfe, a Non-Governmental Organization, and the Makueni County government, led to a remarkable transformation.
Under the visionary leadership of Hon. Francis Mwania Mulwa, six additional water points were established, strategically located at intervals of less than two kilometers from one another. These vital water sources, namely Kilumilo A, Kilumilo B, Yikisaya, Ndauni, Kavungwa, and Kikauni, now stand as beacons of hope, ensuring that clean and accessible water reaches the doorsteps of the residents.
The impact of this initiative has transcended the boundaries of basic necessity. Kilumilo Primary School and Kavungwa Primary School have embraced this newfound resource, not only for domestic use but also for a noble cause. Both schools have utilized the water to nurture the environment, planting over three hundred seedlings each. This thoughtful endeavor not only beautifies the surroundings but also serves as a proactive response to mitigate the effects of climate change.

During the event, Hon. Mulwa passionately encouraged the community to take ownership of these water projects. He emphasized the importance of utilizing the water resourcefully, suggesting innovative ideas such as establishing tree nurseries. These nurseries could not only enhance the local environment but also provide sustainable livelihoods for the residents. Furthermore, he advocated for continued support from organizations like Welthungerhilfe, paving the way for even more transformative projects in the future.
The Kilumilo water project stands as a beacon of unity, resilience, and progress. It symbolizes what communities can achieve through collaboration, determination, and a shared vision for a better tomorrow. As clean water flows into the lives of the residents, it brings with it the promise of brighter futures, healthier communities, and a thriving environment for generations to come.
